Why do French babies cry differently than German babies? What does that reveal about language acquisition?

Even before uttering their first word, babies are already experts in their native language. The proof? Their cries bear the imprint of the language they heard in the womb. This fascinating phenomenon reveals how much the human brain is wired for language long before birth.

Babies can already hear in the womb

From the 27th week of pregnancy, the fetus perceives external sounds, particularly its mother's voice. What it primarily captures is the melody of the language: the rising and falling of the voice, the rhythm of sentences, the pauses. This is called prosody.

Low-frequency sounds penetrate the amniotic fluid better, which explains why the maternal voice is the most familiar and most remembered. But the baby also perceives external voices, music, and everyday environmental sounds.

Cries that carry an accent

In 2009, a team of German researchers (Mampe et al., Current Biology) made a surprising discovery: French and German newborns do not cry in the same way. French babies cry with a rising melody, while German babies cry with a falling melody, exactly like the natural prosody of their respective languages.

This is no coincidence. From birth, babies imitate the melodic contour they memorized in utero. In other words, language learning begins long before the first word, long before the first smile—it begins in the womb.

Recognizing languages before speaking

Infants distinguish their native language from a foreign language from the very first days of life. They are particularly sensitive to rhythm: syllable-timed languages like French, stress-timed like English, or mora-timed like Japanese, are perceived differently by their brains.

Around 6 to 8 months, something remarkable happens: babies begin to "specialize." They gradually lose the ability to distinguish sounds that do not exist in their native language. A Japanese baby, for example, will soon no longer distinguish the English "r" from "l". This window of total openness to the sounds of the world is precious, and it closes.

What this means for bilingual learning

Babies raised in a bilingual environment retain their ability to distinguish the sounds of both languages for longer. Early exposure (before and after birth) is a real advantage, not a cognitive overload.

Speaking two languages at home, singing nursery rhymes in another language, playing with words and sounds: all this nourishes a brain naturally ready to accommodate multiple linguistic systems at once.
