We often have the impression of rejection, but this is not the case. It is important to differentiate between rejection and resistance.
Rejection: a refusal of the language.
Resistance: a matter of effort: the brain simply chooses the path of least resistance.
Here's what's actually happening:
From the moment they start school, your child spends up to 8 hours a day there.
-
They want to please their teachers.
-
They want to fit in with their friends.
-
Their entire social life is built in this language!
Your language, spoken at home by only one parent for a few hours a day, has to compete with all of that.
It's an unequal fight, isn't it?
The brain chooses the path of least resistance
The school language offers immediate results. Using the second language requires stepping out of one's comfort zone.
It's not against you. It's not against your culture. It's not a matter of love.
It's simply a reflection of the environment where their brain "lives" most of the time.
So, how should you react to this resistance?
-
Stay the course: Don't switch to French for convenience.
-
Be consistent: Regularity is key.
-
Be kind: Encourage without forcing.
Parents who maintain this effort will be thanked by their children years later. The learning window doesn't stay open forever, but it is wide open now. Take advantage of it!
